Volunteer Opportunity: Publishing Coordinator for Incarcerated Authors | Hundred Stories Project Publishing Literacy Program
Are you passionate about helping authors bring their books to life? Do you have experience with self-publishing and an interest in supporting incarcerated authors? Our organization is currently seeking dedicated volunteers to assist with the publishing of Hundred Stories Project written by incarcerated authors through our Hundred Stories Project, in collaboration with our writing beyond the prison living archive at Humanities institute at Stony Brook University – https://ubfsf.org/hundred-stories-project/
This is a volunteer position with the option for a stipend based on available funding, awarded upon the successful completion of each book published.
What You Will Do:
- Collaborate with Program Director and university partners in managing incarcerated authors’ book materials.
- Work with graphic designers to create professional and compelling book cover art.
- File and submit manuscripts for copyright through the U.S. Copyright Office.
- Format and upload manuscripts for self-publishing platforms like KDP and IngramSpark, including author bios, book descriptions, and other necessary materials.
- Purchase and assign ISBNs for each book published.
- Coordinate with eBook formatting services to ensure manuscripts are optimized for digital publication.
- Work closely with a website developer to create a platform for book distribution.
- Assist with additional publishing duties and tasks as needed in the production process.
What You Need to Succeed:
- Strong ability to manage deadlines and juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, professional environment.
- Proven willingness and ability to work with incarcerated authors in a supportive and collaborative manner.
- Access to a computer, printing capabilities (when necessary), and proficiency in Microsoft Office & Adobe
- Minimum of two years of experience with self-publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), IngramSpark, or similar platforms.
- Hands-on experience with manuscript formatting, purchasing ISBNs, and filing digital materials with the U.S. Electronic Copyright Office.
- A passion for literacy programs, social justice, and supporting the voices of incarcerated individuals.
